Antarctic Sejong Science Base Extension Project is a project to secure the symbolism of the Korea’s antarctic Base. Sejong Science Base was completed in 1988 and in this project, the base have gone through the removing and repairing/reinforcing process. Also, additional Summer Research Building and Maintenance Building was built. By the peculiarities of Antarctica, local production is impossible and production is very difficult. Therefore, it was necessary to consider those conditions when making a comprehensive plan of maximizing domestic production and transport / unloading.
Not only to minimize the on-site production and on-site casting but also to lessen the weight, we applied steel frame as a main frame system and PC slab as a main floor structure system. Also two things are reflected when designing the base. First, beam installation interval was reviewed to minimize the joints when assembling. Second, heat wires or insulating materials were installed to steel members that are exposed to the outside air to prevent the brittle fracture. For the main design load, the basic wind speed V0=50.8m/sec, regional coefficient S = 0.22g, and the basic snow load Sg = 1.7KN / ㎡ were respectively applied.
